A resident of Katy, William Kiefer said after his big lottery win: “The greatest gift my parents gave me was to be raised a Christian. I plan to give 60 percent of all [my] after-tax winnings to charity.” Lottery officials shared that they had never seen such generosity before. One of the charitable causes Kiefer chose to commit to was the care of retired Catholic nurses. Church members describe him as a “really good man with a big heart”. Kiefer, who elected to receive his prize in 29 annual payments, also donated some of his winnings to support abused children and to help in the Haitian relief effort.
